Vernacular Formalities

Vernacular Formalities

Turtle, at home in his politics

loves the intimacy of shells,

looks slightly to the Right

and the right of rites,

intensely inspects the Left

and what’s left ---

long, lonely contemplation

in his closet ---prayer.

A shifting vowel and accent

will have us prey

upon the lower forms of life:

subject, object, the verb in between –

asymmetry slanting as a star

or Turtle imploding its grammar,

squinting his camera to see

how high the moon, how low the sun,

ascertaining that soon, so very soon

a dread-dimensioned world’s undone.
